This is a drink native to Northern Nigeria. If you
have never been there then get ready to drink a
rich blend of its culture. It is super delicious,
easy to make and very healthy.Kunu basically
means ‘drink’ and aya is ‘tiger nuts’.
Ingredients
Tiger nuts – 10 cups
Dates- 3 cups
Ginger- 3-5 pieces (depending on size and how
peppery you want it to be)
Coconut- 2 big
Sugar- optional
Flavour of your choice- 1 cup
Water
Tiger nuts are rich in fibre, vitamins, and
protein. Despite its sweet taste, it helps in
regulating blood sugar levels and don’t forget
how milky it is, yummy! They are so nutritious
that they are practically used in fighting
malnutrition. Ginger is loaded as well. It is a
delicious spice perfect for lowering heart
disease risk. It can treat indigestion, nausea,
menstrual pain and aids weight loss (ladies,
don’t we love this?). Dates contain a whole lot
of vitamins and minerals, relieving constipation,
reducing stroke risk and blood pressure. It is
beneficial to pregnant women and boosting
your brain power, amongst other things.
Coconut is good for your brain health, heart,
immune system, and digestion. It fights
cancer, inflammation, ulcer, and kidney
infection. It improves your skin, aiding teeth
hygiene, energy levels, and weight loss. Too
good to be true?
Steps
1. Make sure all ingredients are super fresh.
Pick out the dirt and bad ones from the tiger
nuts.
2. Peel the coconuts and ginger and cut into
blender-friendly pieces.
3. Remove the seeds of the dates and watch
out for those already decaying.
4. Wash each ingredient thoroughly.
5. Blend, adding only a little water when
necessary. You don’t want it to be too watery.
6. Sieve using a screen then the sediments
can be blended again with as little water as
possible so it does not lose its taste.
7. Add sugar and vanilla. Refrigerate and
serve chilled with any snack.
